Eligibility for Compulsory Health Insurance (PSD)

The following individuals qualify for Compulsory Health Insurance:

  • Lithuanian citizens;
  • Foreigners permanently residing in Lithuania: 
    • Non-EU: With permanent residence permit; 
    • EU: With certificate of permanent residence in Lithuania;
  • Foreigners with a temporary residence permit obtained in Lithuania if legally employed (including their kids);
  • Foreigners with a temporary residence permit who have worked in Lithuania for at least six months and have registered at the Employment Service;
  • Foreigners who have been granted additional protection in Lithuania, as well as unaccompanied minors.

The following individuals do not qualify for Compulsory Health Insurance:

  • Individuals with a Schengen visa;
  • Individuals with a national (D) visa;
  • Individuals with a temporary residence permit or a Temporary Residence card as a family member of a European Union citizen (unless they are employed or have worked in Lithuania for at least six months and have registered at the Employment Service).

If you are not covered by PSD, you will need to either:

  1. Purchase private health insurance (BTA, Gjensidige, Seesam, Ergo, Lietuvos draudimas, IF). Full list here.
  2. Pay each time you have to visit a doctor.
