Skalvija Cinema Center is a cozy municipal arthouse cinema in central Vilnius. Opened in 1963, it is the oldest operating cinema in the city and one of the few cinemas in Vilnius to have survived the wave of cinema closures in the 1980s and 1990s.
Known for its distinctive repertoire, Skalvija presents European and world arthouse cinema, from film classics to contemporary independent films. The programme includes retrospectives, film festivals, special screenings and discussions, attracting both local film lovers and international audiences. The cinema has one screen with 113 seats and a café, Backstage Cafe.
Skalvija is a member of the European cinema network Europa Cinemas and has received two Europa Cinemas awards for its programming and educational activities.
Since 2004, Skalvija has organized the Vilnius Documentary Film Festival, the oldest documentary film platform in the Baltic States.
Film education is another important part of Skalvija’s activities. The cinema runs programmes for young audiences, including the Skalvija Film Academy, a two-year filmmaking programme for 15 - 17-year-olds led by film professionals.
