Vilnius Portal

Located in Vilnius Town Hall Square, the Portal has become one of the city’s most unexpected modern landmarks, connecting Vilnius with the world in real time. Created by Lithuanian artist and entrepreneur Benediktas Gylys, founder of the Portals.org initiative, it is the first artwork and technology installation of its kind, opening a live visual link between cities and communities across the globe.

The Portal is part of the international Portals network, connecting Vilnius with Lublin, Dublin, and Philadelphia. The network continues to grow, with each new Portal becoming a bridge between cultures, cities, and people. Everyday moments of waving, dancing, conversations, and shared reactions turn the installation into a constantly changing social experience.

After an earlier stage in a different location, the Portal found its permanent home in Town Hall Square, one of the liveliest spaces in Vilnius Old Town. Set within the UNESCO-listed historic centre, the installation blends naturally into the city’s historical surroundings while adding a distinctly contemporary and futuristic layer to the square.

The Vilnius Portal invites passers-by to pause for a moment, look up from their screens, and connect with someone on the other side of the world. Sometimes, a simple wave or shared smile says enough.
