Vilnius Ranks Among the Best in the World for the Sharing Economy

In the latest Sharing Economy Index published by the international organization Consumer Choice Center, Vilnius ranked first in Europe and second in the world, only behind Dubai. Nashville takes third place globally, followed by Tallinn in fourth and London in fifth. This ranking highlights that the Lithuanian capital offers consumers an excellent range of sharing economy services with minimal regulatory barriers.

According to Emil Panzaru, Research Director at the Consumer Choice Center, Vilnius’ leadership in the global ranking is driven not only by its well-developed car-sharing, housing, and other key sharing economy services, but also by the thriving fintech sector.

"Vilnius aims to build infrastructure that will help maintain its leading position in the sharing economy. According to data from the Bank of Lithuania, the country has issued the most fintech licenses in the European Union, and by the end of 2028, the city will host the largest technology center outside the United States – the 'Tech Zity Hub'," Panzaru notes.

Dovilė Aleksandravičienė, Head of Vilnius’ business and tourism development agency Go Vilnius, adds that the city’s strong position in the sharing economy ranking is both a recognition of its business community and infrastructure, and a positive signal for foreign investors and talent.

"Vilnius’ high ranking shows that the city can combine an advanced business and technology environment with practical everyday convenience. Vilnius is an intuitive city – sharing economy services operate widely and smoothly here. As a result, both residents and people considering moving to Vilnius immediately experience a more flexible, accessible, and convenient pace of life. This enhances the city’s appeal to talent and investors who are looking not only for innovation but also for a city where living and creating is easy," Aleksandravičienė says.

The Sharing Economy Index ranks the 65 largest cities in the world based on the accessibility and availability of sharing services. The index evaluates taxi services, vehicle and item sharing, peer-to-peer lending platforms, and similar opportunities.

This index is the only sharing economy metric that integrates advanced statistical analysis using the I-distance method to determine how restrictive sharing economy regulations might impact technological innovation and consumer welfare.

Go Vilnius is the official business and tourism development agency for the city, working to boost Vilnius’ international competitiveness. The organization increases the city’s visibility and attractiveness, shapes its image, and promotes inbound tourism, international conferences, foreign investment, and talent growth.
