Getting health coverage in Lithuania is simple with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), which manages the compulsory health insurance (CHI) scheme. CHI ensures that residents have access to essential healthcare services. Learn more on the NHIF website.
Yes! All residents—citizens and foreign nationals with a declared place of residence—must pay monthly CHI contributions. Employed residents have this covered by their employer. Without CHI, you’ll pay for healthcare yourself.
You must pay CHI until you officially declare your departure. Once your residence is updated and you’re no longer taxed in Lithuania, contributions stop.
CHI covers:
Permanent residents of Lithuania
Foreign nationals temporarily residing in Lithuania who are legally employed, and their minor family members
Unaccompanied foreign minors
Individuals granted subsidiary or additional protection
UK citizens under the UK-EU withdrawal agreement
Individuals covered by EU social security coordination or international agreements
Displaced persons
You can, but CHI contributions are still mandatory for permanent residents.
Employed: Your employer handles it.
Freelancers/self-employed: You pay through Sodra. Book a consultation here.
CHI provides access to:
