Seimas Palace

In short

The Seimas Palace is a symbol of the Lithuanian nation's resistance to the Soviet occupation. On March 11, 1990, an act “On the Restoration of an Independent State of Lithuania” was announced in the Seimas Palace. On January 13, 1991, tens of thousands of people defended the Seimas Palace from the Soviet army which intended to occupy it. A place of remembrance - the remains of the barricades used and monuments - reminds of this event.

Brief History

The Seimas Palace is the building of the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania located in Vilnius.

The construction of the first building started in 1967. Architects Algimantas Nasvytis and Vytautas Nasvytis were in charge of the construction. The palace was completed in 1980. The Supreme Soviet of the Lithuanian SSR moved into this building from the building of the Lithuanian SSR State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

In 1978, the building of the Ministry of Finance of the Lithuanian SSR (architect Andrius Gudaitis) was built next to it, and in 1979 the building of the Lithuanian Council of Trade Unions (architect Česlovas Mazūras) was built.

At the end of the 20th century, these buildings were transferred to the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and renamed the II Seimas Palace (former building of the Ministry of Finance of the Lithuanian SSR) and III Seimas Palace (former Palace of the Lithuanian Council of Trade Unions).

From 1993 to 1997, the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Lithuania was located in the western part of the I Seimas Palace.
