The 13th World Congress of the International Association of University Theatres (AITU-IUTA) and the International University Theatre Festival will take place in Vilnius from 8 to 13 July. Hosted by Vilnius University and the Vilnius University Culture Centre, the event will be held in the Northern and Baltic region for the first time.
Founded in 1579, Vilnius University is one of the oldest universities in Central and Eastern Europe, with a long-standing tradition of academic excellence and cultural life. Its historic Central Campus, located in Vilnius' UNESCO-listed Old Town, will provide the setting for the congress and festival.
The event will bring together university theatre practitioners, researchers, educators and students from more than 20 countries. Hundreds of participants are expected to attend the congress, while the accompanying International University Theatre Festival will present 16 performances and artistic events by university theatre companies from Europe, Latin America, Africa and other regions.
This year's congress will examine the role of university theatre in responding to today's global challenges, including climate change, technological transformation and the resilience of younger generations. Through discussions, performances and artistic exchange, participants will explore how theatre contributes to education, research and civic engagement within universities.
Bringing together the international university theatre community, the congress provides a platform for sharing artistic practices, developing new academic collaborations and strengthening international networks between higher education institutions.
