Vilnius Featured in Fortune for Turning Green Living Into Economic Strength

Global business magazine Fortune has highlighted Vilnius as an example of how a city’s sustainability and quality of life can become strategic advantages for economic competitiveness. In the article “Vilnius is a nice, green place to live – and it’s turning that into a competitive advantage for its economy,” the publication notes that Vilnius’ approach to livability, public services and green infrastructure is increasingly shaping international perceptions.

The piece emphasizes how clean water, accessible green spaces and a people-oriented urban environment contribute to the city’s appeal. As Fortune notes, nearly all residents live within 300 meters of parks or natural areas, and the city holds the title of European Green Capital 2025.

Go Vilnius representatives interviewed for the article underline the importance of visibility: “The Green Capital title put us on the map,” says Mangirdas Šapranauskas, Head of Foreign Investment and Talent Development Department. Vilnius’ Chief Sustainability Officer, Anton Nikitin, adds that the city’s approach is rooted in everyday quality of life: “We don’t want to be green because we’re green; we want to be green because we want our city to be very livable, a very safe city, a very resilient city.”

The article also reflects perspectives from the city’s business community. Entrepreneur Tomas Okmanas describes Vilnius as a “super safe and green city” and “a fantastic place to live,” while Tech Zity founder Darius Žakaitis highlights the shift in company priorities: “Now two additional criteria are just as important: talent attraction and quality of life.”

Fortune’s coverage reinforces Vilnius’ growing reputation as a city where sustainability, talent and innovation intersect, and where quality of life is becoming a competitive asset in the global market.
