This summer, Vilnius invites residents and visitors to experience the city in a completely new way — from the water. Starting July 25, the Neris River, which flows through the heart of the Lithuanian capital, hosts its first-ever fully electric passenger boats. Reviving a tradition of river navigation in a modern, eco-friendly format, this new attraction blends nature, and sustainable travel — creating a unique experience for both residents and visitors.
A Quiet, Eco-Friendly Way to Explore the City
Silent and emissions-free, the new electric boats offer a peaceful alternative to exploring Vilnius. As they glide through the city center, passengers can enjoy views of Vilnius from a rarely seen perspective. This is the perfect choice for those looking to slow down, unplug, and see the city’s iconic landmarks from the water — free from traffic noise and urban hustle.
The 30–50 minute cruise offers scenic views of historic Gediminas castle, modern architecture, green boulevards, and vibrant waterfront areas.
Locally Named Boats Inspired by Nature and Myth
The fleet features four sleek catamaran-style boats named through a public vote that engaged thousands of locals. The chosen names — “Rytas” (Morning), “Lašiša” (Salmon), “Geležinis vilkas” (Iron Wolf), and “Smilga” (Bentgrass) — reflect Vilnius symbols, history and the Neris River ecosystem.
Designed by Dutch firm Naval Architects and built by Latvia’s Glacier Yachts Shipyard, the boats each carry up to 32 passengers and are fully accessible for people with limited mobility. Features include bike racks, free Wi-Fi, digital info screens, and onboard surveillance systems for added safety. Additionally, 80% of the roof is covered in solar panels, boosting energy efficiency and highlighting Vilnius' commitment to sustainability.
A Vision for a Greener City
According to Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas: “The Neris river has always been central to the city’s development. Today, its banks are home to parks, offices, and new residential areas. We want these connections to be not only fast and convenient but also sustainable. These boats were designed to have minimal impact on the riverbanks and environment. The floating docks are mobile structures placed directly on the water — with no disruption to nature. We believe this will become an everyday part of urban life.”
Vilnius: European Green Capital 2025
The launch of the electric riverboats is part of Vilnius’ broader green transformation strategy. In 2025, Vilnius officially holds the title of European Green Capital — a prestigious award recognizing innovation, sustainability, and environmental leadership. The new river cruises are both a symbolic and practical step toward greener urban mobility.
These cruises are open to all — from curious tourists and families to commuters, athletes, and photographers. It’s a peaceful escape in the middle of the city, proving once again that comfort, innovation, and ecology can go hand in hand.
Connecting Key Parts of the City
The cruise route includes five stops:
